High Court summons WASA chief over man's death after falling into uncovered culvert

07 March 2017 The top officials of WASA and the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) have been summoned by the High Court over a man's death after falling into uncovered culvert in the capital.

The bench of justices Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Mohammad Ullah issued the order on Tuesday after media reports over the incident at the capital's Paltan the previous day.

The managing director of Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) and CEO of DSCC will have to appear before the court on Mar 19 and explain themselves.

The court also issued four separate rules on the matter asking why they would not be held liable for death due to negligence, punished of neglecting duty and criminal proceedings will not be initiated against them.

It also asked why the victim's family will not be compensated.

The local government secretary, Dhaka metro police chief, WASA chief, CEO, chief engineer (drainage) and chief waste management officer of DSCC and the Paltan police OC have been asked to come up with explanations.

Around 7pm on Monday, 55-year-old Sanu Mia, who came from Brahmanbarhia to visit his brother, fell into an uncovered culvert at the capital's Paltan area.

The fire-service pulled him up after half an hour and rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the doctors declared him dead around 7:45pm.
