08 September 2016 The High Court today questioned the legality of the government’s holding Junior School Certificate (JSC) examination. The court issued a rule asking the government to explain in four weeks why its decision to hold the JSC examination should not be declared illegal.

The HC bench of Justice Quamrul Islam Siddique and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil came up with the rule after hearing a writ petition filed challenging the legality of the government’s decision to hold the JSC examination.

Supreme Court lawyer Eunus Ali Akond submitted the writ petition to the HC on July 27 saying the government is empowered under the Intermediate and Secondary Education Ordinance 1961 to hold only secondary and higher secondary certificate examinations.

The government is not allowed to hold JSC examination under this law, he said.

School teachers are engaged in coaching business due to the introduction of the JSC examination, he added.

The petitioner also prayed to the HC to cancel the government notice issued on June 15, 2010 on holding JSC examination.
