09 July 2016 Police have identified who they say was the assailant gunned down during the Eid-day confrontation after the attack on Sholakia Eidgah in Kishoreganj.

Kishoreganj police, citing a general diary filed with Bhatara Police Station in the capital, said assailant Abir Rahman was a university student in Dhaka and was missing since March.

“Abir’s father Serajul Islam filed the general diary with Bhatara Police Station on July 6 with a photo of his son,” said Sub-Inspector Shafiqul Islam of Kishoreganj Police Station.

“We matched the photo with the attacker to confirm his identity,” he told The Daily Star.

According to the SI of Kishoreganj Police Station, Abir in the GD was mentioned as a fourth-year business student of a private university in Dhaka and his family lives in Bashundhara.

Abir died during the gun battle with police on Thursday after a group of alleged militants launched the attack that left four people, including two policemen and a woman, dead.

Bangladesh’s largest Eid congregation is held at Sholakia.

Bhatara Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nurul Muqtakin endorsed to The Daily Star about the missing diary. “His father filed the diary on July 6.”
