04 July 2016 President Md Abdul Hamid has said that Bangladesh is committed to crush all kinds of terrorism and violent extremism.

The president, who is now in Bhutan for a state visit, addressed the country’s parliament on Monday.

“I am saddened today in the wake of unfortunate deaths of some innocent people in Dhaka who were mercilessly killed by a group of miscreants on 1 July 2016.

“I would like to reiterate that we are not frightened of such cowardly act and our government is committed to fight against all types of terrorism and violent extremism,” he told members of the National Assembly during a joint session.

Hamid stressed stronger partnership between the countries for economic developments of the people.

He said that Bhutan has a special place in the heart of the Bangladeshi people as it was the first to recognise Bangladesh as a sovereign country. “Since then, our relations have grown in depth and dimension based on mutual respect.”

Describing hydropower as the most potential avenue of cooperation between the nations, Hamid said, “We need to take more target-oriented actions for achieving tangible results in this area.”

In his address to the joint session of the House the issue of regional connectivity also came up.  “I am happy to know that the National Assembly of Bhutan, on 21 June 2016, passed the bill related to the BBIN Motor Vehicles Agreement.”

The president also touched on Bhutan’s pioneering concept of Gross National Happiness.

He said that the unique philosophy to meet global challenges is getting more and more acceptance.

“If we let this simple concept be our guide, if we pursue the vision described by His Majesty the Fourth King, then I have no doubt our future generations will live in a world that would be more prosperous, more secure and peaceful, and more meaningful.”

Earlier, on his arrival at the Parliament, Hamid was received by Speaker of the National Assembly of Bhutan Lyonpo Jigme Zangpo and Chairman of National Council Sonam Kinga.

Following his address, the president exchanged greetings with the members of the Bhutanese parliament.
