04 July 2016 The inspector general of police today said two suspects are in custody over the Gulshan cafe attack that claimed the lives of 20 hostages, mostly foreign nationals, and two police officers.

While talking to journalists at Army Stadium in Banani, IGP AKM Shahidul Hoque, however, did not disclose the identities of the detainees or where they were being kept.

The only thing he said about them that they were both physically unwell and will be quizzed after their condition improves. “One of them is in hospital, the other is in custody.”

Earlier, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the Bangladesh Army spoke of one suspect being held from the Gulshan attack scene. However, the identity of the suspect was not disclosed.

Today, on the second day of the national mourning held in commemoration of the attack, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, followed by people from all walks of life, paid homage to the slain victims at Army Stadium.

IGP AKM Shahidul Hoque also paid his homage to the victims there this morning. After paying his tribute, the police chief spoke a few words to the waiting journalists.

He underscored the “success” of Operation Thunderbolt, the mission carried out by Bangladesh Army-led joint forces, that managed to secure 13 hostages safely out of the attack site.

“Such successful operation is a very rare instance,” he said.

He also added that the names of the killed militants, who died during Operation Thunderbolt, were false names. “We were searching for these militants for some time.”
