Hasina, the daughter of Sheikh Mujib, placed a wreath at his portrait at Dhanmondi 32 at around 7am on Thursday. Ruling Awami League’s central leaders followed her.

Party General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam, Advisory Council members Amir Hossain Amu and Tofail Ahmed, Presidium members Obaidul Quader and Matia Chowdhury, and Joint General Secretaries Mahbub-ul Alam Hanif, Dipu Moni and Jahangir Kabir Nanak, among others, were present at the time.

Later the prime minister went to Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi from where she started for Tungiparha to pay tribute to the grave of her father.

After Hasina left the place, different organisations including Awami League associates placed wreaths at the portrait.

National and party flags were hoisted at Awami League’s central and unit offices across the country in the morning to mark the day.

Born on Mar 17, 1920 at Gopalganj’s Tungiparha, Bangabandhu became the top leader of the Bengali struggle for independence.

A group of disgruntled Army officers killed him and most of his family on Aug 15, 1975.
