The ministry’s Senior Information Officer Shahedur Rahman said that it was cancelled ‘due to unavoidable circumstances.’

Earlier on Tuesday, the ministry shifted the briefing to 2:30pm from 11am after reports of the governor going to the Prime Minister’s Office came in.

A senior PMO official told bdnews24.com that Atiur tendered his resignation after meeting the Prime Minister.

Earlier in the day, Atiur told reporters  at his home that he was ‘ready’ to resign if ‘the prime minister wants'.

Bangladesh has been hit badly after the Philippines Daily Inquirer reported on Feb 29 that $81 million of its foreign currency reserves held by the New York Federal Reserve  has been stolen on Feb 4.

The central bank kept the government and its board of directors in the dark about the heist for around a month.

Muhith first learned of it from media reports.

On Sunday, he lashed out at the Bangladesh Bank vowing action for having ‘the audacity not to inform him about issue’.

“Very incompetent,” he said of the central bank.

Governor Atiur Rahman, who was in India to attend an IMF meeting, returned to Dhaka on Monday and met Muhith the same day.

“He (the finance minister) said the Bangladesh Bank will benefit if I leave...But I believe since the prime minister appointed me, I should resign only when she asks me to,” the governor said while speaking to reporters at his Gulshan home.
