After his body was taken to the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka at 10am on Monday, the war hero was honoured with a state salute by a police team.

His coffin was covered with layers of flowers, bouquets and wreaths brought by ministers, writers, artistes, intellectuals, politicians, social and cultural activists, and readers as a symbol of their respect to the poet, considered one of the finest in Bengali literature.

Azad died at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) hospital on Saturday, about two months after he suffered a brain stroke. He was 74.

After placing the wreath at the poet’s coffin, Professor Anisuzzaman said, “He was a student of mine. So, I know him a bit better than others do. He was one of the most notable contemporary poet.”

Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor recalled Azad as ‘a man of struggle’.

“He fought for the country’s independence … He struggled all his life for the people’s right.”

Poet Nurul Huda said, “Rafiq Azad is the name of a freedom fighter, the finest warrior in the field of poetic aesthetics, humaneness and lifestyle.”

Azad’s body was later taken to the Bangla Academy premises and then to the Dhaka University mosque where his funeral prayers were held.

He would be buried at the Martyred Intellectuals Graveyard in Dhaka's Mirpur after another funeral prayer at his Dhanmondi residence, said Khan Abyay Azad, younger son of the poet.

Born on Feb 14, 1941, at Tangail’s Ghatail, Rafiq Azad finished his studies in Bangla at Dhaka University in 1967.

After that, he was engaged as a teacher for a while.

He also worked from 1972 to 1984 as the executive editor of monthly ‘Uttaradhikar’, published by Bangla Academy.

Later, he held posts at Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation, Upajatiya Cultural Academy and the Directorate of Archives and Libraries.

He was honoured with the Ekushey Padak and Bangla Academy Award for his contribution to the Bengali literature.
