The Akheri Munajat (final prayers), conducted by Indian cleric Maulana Muhammad Saad, began at 11:05am on Sunday and ended at 11:30am.

The second phase of the Ijtema, one of the biggest Muslim congregations in the world, began on Jan 15 after the first phase was held between Jan 8 and Jan 10.

Faithfuls from 32 districts of the country joined the congregation during the two phases. Those from the  32 other districts will participate in the next year’s congregation.

Thousands of Muslims gathered at the banks of the Turag in the early hours of Sunday.

Some even had come the night before to ensure participation in the final prayers.

Daylong traffic restrictions were put in place at and around the Ijtema venue, said Deputy Commissioner SM Alam of Gazipur.

The number of security personnel on duty was doubled for the Akheri Munajat, according to Md Harun ar Rashid, superintendent of the district police.

Special shuttle buses have been arranged for transporting the faithful  to their homes free of cost.
