She was referring to her government’s bold decision to fund the infrastructure project with domestic resources after the World Bank had refused to finance it.

At a programme in Dhaka on Thursday, she said Bangladesh would never bow down before anyone.

“No-one should ever try to neglect the Bengali race. I think nobody will dare to do that after the lesson they got in relation to Padma Bridge. We have proved that we can,” she said.

Bangladesh government and the World Bank had embroiled in a long tussle after the global lending agency stopped financing the Padma Bridge project alleging ‘high-level’ corruption.

Bangladesh later withdrew the funding request and decided to fund the project with its own money.

Hasina on Dec 10 last year inaugurated the main construction work of the Padma Bridge and river training work.

Once completed, the Tk 230 billion project will help establish direct road communication between Dhaka and 19 southern districts of the country.

This is the biggest self-financed infrastructure project undertaken by Bangladesh government.
