President, PM pay last respects to social welfare minister and freedom fighter Mohsin Ali

16 September 2015 President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have paid their last respects to social welfare minister Mohsin Ali, who died on Monday while under treatment in Singapore.

The late freedom fighter was given state honours after the coffin carrying his body was brought to the South Plaza of the National Parliament Building on Wednesday morning. A police contingent gave the guard of honour. 

Ministers and MPs joined the president, prime minister and Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury in paying their respects to the 66-year-old. His first Namaaj-e-Janaza was also held.

Social welfare ministry’s PRO Maidul Islam Prodhan said the coffin was flown to Maulavibazar, Ali’s hometown, on a helicopter after the programmes at the parliament ended. 

Ali, a commander of the Mukti Bahini under General MAG Osmani during the 1971 Liberation War, is expected to be buried with full state honours at the Hazrat Shah Mostafa Mazhar following a second Namaaj-e-Janaza. 

Mohsin Ali died in Singapore general hospital on Monday while under treatment for pneumonia and cardiac problems. His dead body was flown back to Bangladesh the same day.

On Wednesday morning, Mohsin Ali's body was carried to the Shaheed Minar from his Minto Road house in Dhaka.

Chief Justice SK Sinha, Dhaka University vice-chancellor AMS Arefin Siddique and top leaders of the ruling Awami League and its affiliated fronts paid last respects. Many from his native Maulavibazar also turned up to pay respects.

Ali, born Dec 12, 1948, started his politics as a Bangladesh Chhatra League activist. He was a member of the central committee of Sector Commanders Forum.

A president of the Maulavibazar unit of Awami League from 1998-2005, he was elected as the municipality’s chairman thrice.
