“The results would have been much better if the BNP-Jamaat had not launched violent programmes,” she said on Sunday after the education minister placed the results before her.

The success rate in this year’s exams has dropped to 69.60 percent from last year’s 78.33.

A total of 42, 894 students scored GPA 5 against 70,602 in 2014.

“Bangladesh was facing a huge problem when the exams started. There had been shutdowns before the exams and a non-stop blockade of roads, railways, and waterways was being enforced during the exams. Then started the killing of people in arson attacks in the name of agitation,” Hasina said.

The prime minister congratulated the students, parents and officials for holding the exams in such adverse conditions.

On the government efforts to raise educational standards, the prime minister said the main focus was on the improvement of quality.

“A list of Upazilas without any government educational institution is being prepared. We will consider making existing institutions public and will set up new schools and colleges,” she said.

Hasina also shared her vision of having universities in each district.

A total of 1,061,614 students under 10 educational boards, including madrasas and technical boards, took the exams this year, held between Apr 1 and Jun 22.

The BNP–led alliance had enforced a countrywide blockade of roads, railways and waterways since Jan 5.

It had also called for shutdowns almost daily in February and March except on public and weekly holidays.

There were no shutdown on Apr 1, the day the HSC exam started, but the blockade created anxious moments for students and parents.

The political agitations had forced the government to reschedule this year’s Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and equivalent school-leaving exams.

They had to be held on Fridays and Saturdays, the weekly holidays.

The success rate in the SSC and equivalent exams this year has dropped by 5.95 percent from the previous year’s.
